A small attachment that is secured to the tooth (most often directly onto the tooth's surface) for the purpose of holding the
archwire against each tooth. The archwire fits into a slot in the bracket. Brackets can be fabricated from metal or ceramic.
Brackets generally consist of the following three parts:
(1) Bracket slot: open to the level of the lips and cheeks, so that the arch wire can be smoothly put into the afterburner from the lips and cheeks;
(2) bracket wing: easy to ligate and fix the arch wire, the wing can be attached with a hook for traction, and can be divided into single wing, double wing and three wings according to the shape of bracket wing;
(3) Bracket base: Its shape design is mainly to strengthen the bonding force with the tooth surface. The shape of the base surface of the bracket is suitable for the shape of the lip and buccal surface of each tooth. It has a metal grid or an etched bottom plate. Adhesive to firmly bond the bracket to the tooth surface.
In view of the different orthodontic concepts and methods, sometimes accessories such as traction hooks and auxiliary arch tubes are designed on the brackets.
